Luxembourg, François-Henri de Montmorency-Bouteville, duke de
(1628-1695)
   marshal of France
Born in Paris, François-Henri de Montmorency-Bouteville, duke de Luxembourg, first served under the command of louis II de condé, whom he followed during the fronde and during the War of Devolution. Luxembourg's successes in the Dutch War, however, were checked by the efforts of William of Orange (1672). But he then distinguished himself at Seneffe (1674), and Kassel (1677), and took Mons (1678) from that Dutch ruler. Implicated in the affair of the poisoNS,he was for a short time imprisoned. Marshal Luxembourg regained his command and won great victories during the War of the League of Augsburg—a coalition of European powers including England, Holland, and, later, Savoy—at Fleurus (1690), Steinkerque (1692), and Neerwinden (1693) and, having taken numerous battle flags, was given the sobriquet le tapissier de Notre-Dame (the tapestry maker of Notre-Dame).
